It is an island in the Libyan Sea, located 13.8 km south of Ierapetra. While about 700 meters to the east is the island of Mikronisi. It has a maximum length of 5km. and a width of 1km., the highest point is the hill Kefala where it reaches 31 meters! One of the main characteristics of the island is its golden beaches, from which it got its modern name. Of course, Ierapetra people used to call it \"the island\" as there is a great love and special relationship between them! The island is surrounded by beaches with blue-green waters, the most famous being the northern beach of Belegrina or golden coast.It is a paradise for fossil lovers with the huge number of \"dead\" shells that are found gathered there! In the western part of the island the visitor can find the church of Agios Nikolaos (probably built in the 13th century), the lighthouse, the breakwater and the old saltworks. In the salt marsh salt was produced in antiquity and is an attraction today, especially for migratory birds.At the same time, an important settlement of the Minoan and Roman period with buildings and carved tombs has been identified.
